Local Climate Adaptation
Climate change adaptation means altering our behaviour, systems, and—in some cases—ways of life to protect our families, our economies, and the environment in which we live from the impacts of climate change. (WWF)
South Devon faces intensifying climate risks—flooding, drought, and ecosystem collapse—that demand urgent, coordinated action.
The Bioregional Learning Centre (BLC) is leading an 18-month initiative to develop a joined-up climate adaptation strategy across the region. This project combines grassroots innovation, policy advocacy, and community learning to address critical questions:
- How can we balance flood prevention with regenerative farming?
- What systemic changes are needed to protect biodiversity and local livelihoods?
- How do we empower citizens to lead adaptation efforts?
Key components include:
- Learning Journeys (June 3–7, 2024): Visits to 7+ sites (e.g., Porsham Farm, Riverford) to document regenerative practices.
- Actionable Tools: A short film showcasing local success stories and a discussion paper outlining pathways for policymakers.
- Community-Council Collaboration: Proposals for stakeholder forums and volunteer teams to tackle priorities like flood risk.
