Bioregional Conversations

An action-learning initiative exploring the emergence and evolution of bioregions through a series of seven cutting-edge conversations with leading practitioners worldwide.

The Bioregional Conversations brought together a small circle of leading bioregional practitioners to deepen the international learning culture around bioregions.

These conversations covered crucial topics such as:

  • Setting up funding ecosystems for bioregions
  • Engaging in landscape-scale visioning, decision-making, and action
  • Working with existing power structures
  • Incorporating spiritual and indigenous ways of inhabiting the Earth

The initiative has led to the creation of a Bioregional Learning Alliance and a partnership with Gaia Education to inspire new bioregions through a webinar series.

The project featured seven conversations with experts from various bioregions, including:

  1. South Devon, Findhorn Watershed, and Bioregioning Tayside
  2. Colombia and Chile
  3. Burrenbeo Trust, Burren College of Art, and Atelier Luma
  4. Buckminster Fuller Institute, Bay Delta Trust, and Regenerate Cascadia
  5. Enlivened Cooperative, Amazon Sacred Headwaters Initiative, and University of Hawai'i Manoa
  6. Resilience Earth Coop, Mallorca, and La Garroxta Bioregion
  7. Costa Rica Regenerativa, Sweet City, and Diamante Valley bioregion

Each conversation is available to watch, providing insights into different approaches to bioregioning across the globe.

What is bioregioning?

What is bioregioning?

Bioregioning is about re-establishing connections to local landscapes and their cycles. It involves building networks of local knowledge to ensure critical decisions are made in the best interests of the bioregion, with greater citizen agency. Bioregioning encompasses:

  • Belonging and seeing oneself as part of the ecosystem
  • Systems thinking and understanding interconnections
  • Collective imagining and resilience
  • Governance, policy, and finance considerations
  • Evidence-based adaptability and regenerative practices

As the Bioregional Learning Centre team notes, "It's a verb, not a noun, where the meaning keeps unfolding."
